Year 1

At Parklands we have two Year 1 Classes, Beech and Birch Class.

Beech Class is taught by Mrs Rowena Kiedyk and Mrs Tanya O’Boyle, with Mrs Anna Jones and Mrs Ruth Hanneman as teaching assistants.

Birch Class is  taught by Miss Beth Grand and Mrs Cerys Mainwaring.   Miss Roisin MacGregor is currently on maternity leave. The teaching assistants in Birch Class are: Mrs Jessica Venebles, Ms Chris Glanville and Miss Harriet Fancourt.

Year 1 has a motivating and creative curriculum that aims to engage all pupils so that learning is fun and engaging. We aim to inspire children so that individually they are able to achieve their full potential. Our classrooms are bright and welcoming with interactive displays that allow children to continue their learning independently.

The topics in Year 1 are:

– Enchanted Woodland

– Yum Yum

– Dinosaurs

– Superheroes

– On The Move

– Boats, Beaches and Pirates

All work we set is linked to the half termly topic and our afternoon subjects are taught in blocks to enable children to learn as much as they can about the given subject before moving on to the next. We make full use of our woodland and pond area that is situated just outside the Year 1 classrooms for lots of subjects, for example in Art we make fairy houses using natural resources.

Where possible Year 1 will have an educational school trip every term. Last year we went on a trip to Beaulieu Motor Museum as part of our On the Move topic, and Chichester Harbour and West Wittering beach as part of our Boats, Beaches and Pirates topic. We also invite visitors into school to share with us their knowledge and expertise, for example policemen, firemen, and bike experts. We also like to have creative days where children (and teachers) get to dress up and take part in creative tasks, for example Fairy/Pixie day, Bike day, Superhero day, Pirate day.

It is really important that children learn to read as it is a life skill. Children are heard reading at least twice a week in Year 1. Once individually and once in a guided reading group. We ask that children read at home as much as possible. Reading is also taught through Read Write Inc Phonics scheme.

Homework is sent home on a Thursday and needs to be returned the following Tuesday. Homework is linked to the half-termly topic and will be something children have been or will be completing in the week.

To support children’s individual needs in Year 1 we have six teaching assistants: Mrs Ruth Hanneman, Mrs Anna Jones, Mrs Lisa Slattery, Ms Jessica Venables, Mrs Sarah Maidment, Mrs Charlotte Denman. The teaching assistants work with the children at different times throughout the week and run intervention groups throughout the year in order to give extra support to those children that may be underachieving as well as those children whose learning needs extending.
